Week 5: Ouran Highschool Host Club

Normally, I do not go out myself looking for romance manga/anime since they are not my cup of tea but Ouran Highschool Host Club was better than I expected. My girlfriend loves this show and kept talking about how great it is so I thought it'd be perfect timing to give it a try for this class. First, it showcases the cliche of a slice of life but the characters feel dynamic and expressive which I always look for in anime/manga. For example, there is always an intelligent and keen guy or the over dreamer handsome guy. And what makes it great is, the plot and characters are satire and very comedic, almost mocking the cliche in romance. The aesthetic also gives it a vibe that is meant for the female audience but the comedy is well understood for male audiences like me. I usually judge an anime/manga by its cover but I am glad that this one proved me wrong. Lastly, it is interesting that Haruhi is the only girl in the group, however, does not act feminine in any way like any other romance stories. She blends in so well that I sometimes forget that she is a female and I think it is ironic.

Week 3: Gekiga

I don't know how I really feel about "Cigarette Girl". It took me a while to get into reading it just to get used to the style of Matsumoto's writing and progression. On the other hand, the context was very light-hearted and just entertaining to read. A simple slice of life of everyday life with a little humor.  However, I was not very fond of the art style. In last week's topic, I mentioned how I love Tezuka's simplistic style but with Matsumoto's style, I did not like it. I felt that his style felt bland, despite the comical moments. When I pick a certain manga, I usually judge whether I like the art style or not. I did manage to pull it through and get to understand the story a bit but I would personally not want to continue reading it.

Week 12: Silver Spoon

The story takes place in an agricultural school where people are very familiar with livestock. Hachiken has a strong relationship he had with this pig named Katsudon every since it was a baby. He raised it and cared for it as it was his friend. But eventually, he had to give Katsudon away and bought his meat, and made a pork barbeque. He was sad and did not take it for granted, as he appreciated more than anyone else. And eventually, Hachiken gave everyone a wake-up call that livestock is not just animals but their friend who gives you life. Animals are cherished and appreciated, giving them the rights that they deserve. This anime gives a really strong message that animals give us food on the table and we should be more appreciated for them than ourselves who work for the food. It truly makes me think how much we are not thankful enough for the sacrifices these animals make and I believe every animal needs to live a happy fulfilling life because they deserve it more than we do.

Week 13: Oishinbo

Oishinbo generally is about cultural foods and what is in them that makes it good and how they are made. It is quite relaxing to read as it is not story-heavy but instead it tells you the many facts and appreciation of foods from other cultures. It makes the story feel more realistic. I also like how it is not exaggerated with characteristics like a lot of other shows do such as Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma. It is a nice break to read about the cultural aspects and the value we have in our foods today.
